Job Title: Data Analyst – Power BI
Job Location: Hybrid
Job Type: Contract
Role Overview:
On-Demand Group is seeking a Power BI Data Analyst for a contract position with our client to design and build real-time and near real-time dashboards that complete the organization's situational awareness capability. This contractor will transform curated Delta Lake data—queried via Azure Synapse serverless SQL pools or Azure SQL—into compelling, actionable visuals hosted in the Power BI GCC (Government Cloud) environment. The analyst must pair advanced SQL and DAX skills with solid dashboard design expertise, operate within GCC constraints (no Microsoft Fabric), and collaborate closely with the Operations team to turn requirements into user-focused reports.
Key Responsibilities:
Dashboard Development: Create new Power BI dashboards and reports that surface KPIs, alerts, and trends for operations and leadership. Use appropriate visuals (tables, cards, gauges, maps via ArcGIS visuals, etc.) to communicate status and drive decisions.
Real-Time Visualization: Implement DirectQuery connections, push/streaming datasets, or incremental refresh to achieve real-time or near real-time updates. Optimize models for performance and data freshness within GCC limits.
Data Modeling & DAX: Build efficient semantic models in Power BI Desktop; author complex DAX measures (time intelligence, rolling metrics, conditional alerts) to meet business logic. Ensure models follow star-schema best practices.
Advanced SQL: Write and tune SQL against Synapse serverless SQL pools and Azure SQL to shape datasets, create views, and validate data before import. Work with Data Engineers to request or create curated views when needed.
Requirements & UX: Gather and refine dashboard requirements with Operations stakeholders. Iterate on prototypes, incorporate feedback, and document report logic and usage.
Data Quality Validation: Validate data accuracy before publishing; reconcile discrepancies by tracing back to curated sources and coordinating with engineers or MDM stewards.
GCC Environment Stewardship: Work with data architect to configure gateways, data sources, and workspace settings for GCC Low. Address feature gaps (e.g., no Fabric) by selecting supported alternatives.
Required Skills & Experience:
- 3+ years building enterprise dashboards with Power BI (Desktop & Service)
- Expert-level DAX and Power Query (M); deep experience optimizing models for performance
- Advanced T-SQL skills for query design, tuning, and data validation
- Demonstrated success delivering real-time or streaming Power BI solutions (DirectQuery, push datasets, or Stream Analytics output)
- Familiarity with Azure Synapse serverless SQL pools, Delta Lake tables, and Azure SQL
- Strong data visualization and UI/UX instincts; ability to translate operational scenarios into clear visuals
- Experience operating in Microsoft GCC or other government/regulated cloud a strong plus
Preferred Skills:
- Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300) or Azure Enterprise Data Analyst (DP-500)
- Exposure to geospatial visuals or ArcGIS for Power BI
- Understanding of metadata-driven data lakehouse architectures and medallion patterns
This role will work as part of a team and collaborate with other departments in an effort to expand the organization's analytics capabilities regarding operational situational awareness. You will be expected to adhere to established frameworks and standards while bringing your own expertise to improve and innovate. This contract position offers the opportunity to work on a state-of-the-art Azure data platform that directly supports operations and strategic decision-making.
The projected hourly range for this position is $60 to $75.
