Job Title: Mid-Level Java Developer
Job Type: Contract to Hire

Position Overview

We are seeking a Mid-Level Java Developer to join an agile development team supporting key application modernization initiatives. This is a six-month contract-to-hire opportunity for someone with approximately one to three years of software development experience. Strong recent graduates with relevant Java development experience through internships, coursework, or hands-on projects will also be considered.

This person may support either a payment modernization initiative or the modernization of a core member domain. The role offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced senior-level engineers while developing expertise in modern application architecture, event-driven development, and enterprise software engineering.

Potential Areas of Focus

This team is modernizing an existing payment environment and related processes. The work may include:

  • Credit card processing

  • Credit card reader integrations

  • Modernizing existing payment applications and processes

  • Developing solutions without relying on third-party tools

  • Collaborating with a team of approximately three engineers and analysts

Member Domain Modernization

This team is modernizing a core member domain and transitioning away from legacy systems and SOAP services. The work may include:

  • Building out an event-driven architecture

  • Developing modern services and integrations

  • Supporting the transition from legacy applications

  • Collaborating with a team of approximately four to five engineers

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain Java-based applications and services

  • Build solutions using Java, Spring, and Spring Boot

  • Develop and support REST-based services

  • Contribute to event-driven architecture using Kafka

  • Work within MongoDB and Kubernetes environments

  • Participate in CI/CD processes and support continued improvements to delivery practices

  • Partner with business analysts and technical team members to understand project requirements

  • Participate in code reviews and help identify defects early in the development process

  • Communicate risks that may affect project timelines or solution quality

  • Support the modernization of legacy applications and services

  • Learn from senior engineers and expand technical knowledge through hands-on project work

  • Explore how AI may support development practices and future solutions

Required Qualifications

  • Approximately one to three years of software development experience, or relevant hands-on experience gained through education, internships, or project work

  • Experience developing applications with Java

  • Experience with Spring and Spring Boot

  • Experience developing or consuming REST services

  • Familiarity with Kafka and event-driven architecture

  • Familiarity with CI/CD concepts and practices

  • Exposure to MongoDB

  • Exposure to Kubernetes

  • Interest in AI and curiosity about its potential use within software development

  • Ability to work effectively within an Agile development team

  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills

  • Enthusiasm for learning new technologies and the ability to learn quickly on the job

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with a JavaScript framework such as Vue.js, Angular, or React

  • Experience with SOAP services or legacy application modernization

  • Experience with automated testing or test-driven development

  • Experience using Git or another source-control platform

  • Knowledge of integration tools and techniques, including XML, JSON, SOAP, REST, and service-oriented architecture

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
     

The projected hourly range for this position is $60 to $85.
