Job Location: Remote

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Head of Engineering to lead technology strategy, architecture, software engineering, infrastructure, security, and automation for a rapidly scaling, technology-driven organization.

This is a true player-coach leadership role for someone who enjoys building systems while also leading people and shaping long-term technology direction. You'll inherit a modern technology platform, guide a small engineering team, and be responsible for scaling technology to support significant organizational growth.

The ideal candidate is a systems thinker who simplifies complexity, embraces automation, and understands how technology can become a competitive advantage.

Position Summary

The Head of Engineering serves as the senior technology leader responsible for engineering, architecture, security, vendor management, and technology operations.

This leader partners with executive leadership to establish technology priorities while remaining deeply involved in solution architecture, software development, platform reliability, and engineering execution.

Initially, the role is expected to balance approximately:

• 60% technical leadership and hands-on engineering
• 40% people leadership, planning, and business strategy

As the engineering organization grows, responsibilities will naturally shift toward strategic leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership

• Lead all software engineering initiatives across internal platforms and customer-facing systems.
• Establish engineering standards, architecture principles, and development best practices.

Technology Strategy

• Develop and execute a technology roadmap aligned with business objectives.
• Evaluate build-versus-buy decisions across enterprise applications.
• Identify opportunities to simplify technology while increasing scalability.
• Continuously evaluate emerging technologies, including AI and automation.

Platform Ownership

• Own the organization's technology ecosystem, including:
• Custom business applications
• Customer-facing digital platforms
• Learning and content delivery systems
• Internal operational tools
• Third-party SaaS platforms
• AI-powered solutions

Automation & AI

• Identify opportunities to:

• Standardize repeatable business processes

Reliability & Operations

• Own production operations including:
• System reliability
• Release management
• Monitoring and alerting
• Incident response
• Disaster recovery
• Availability planning
• Performance optimization

Cybersecurity

• Lead organizational security efforts including:
• Identity and access management
• Single Sign-On (SSO)
• Vendor security reviews
• Security policies
• Risk management
• Governance
• SaaS access administration

Vendor Management

• Manage external technology relationships including:
• Software vendors
• Technology partners
• Contract negotiations
• License optimization
• Vendor performance

Executive Partnership

• Serve as the technology representative on the leadership team by:
• Prioritizing engineering investments
• Translating business needs into technical initiatives
• Advising executives on technology strategy
• Balancing short-term delivery with long-term scalability

First 90-Day Objectives

Within the first three months, the successful candidate will:

• Develop a thorough understanding of business operations and technology workflows.
• Evaluate the current technology architecture and document opportunities for simplification.
• Assess the full application portfolio and identify opportunities for consolidation or replacement.
• Review infrastructure, security, and vendor relationships.
• Improve software delivery processes and production reliability.
• Deliver an automation initiative that provides measurable business value.
• Present a scalable technology roadmap supporting future organizational growth.

Leadership Expectations

This role requires someone who can:

• Make thoughtful technical decisions with incomplete information.
• Balance speed with long-term maintainability.
• Prioritize engineering work across competing business demands.
• Coach engineers while remaining technically credible.
• Communicate effectively with both executives and technical teams.
• Build consensus without sacrificing execution.

Success Measures

Performance may be measured through improvements in:

• Platform reliability

Required Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have experience:

• Identity and access management
• DevOps and CI/CD practices
• Production monitoring

• Comfortable operating in fast-moving environments.
• Highly accountable and execution-oriented.
• Strong communicators with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Builders who enjoy creating scalable technology solutions.
• Leaders who simplify complexity rather than adding it.
• Passionate about mentoring engineers and building strong teams.

Work Environment

• Periodic travel for leadership meetings and strategic planning sessions.
• Opportunity to influence technology strategy at the executive level.
• High-impact leadership role within a rapidly growing organization.
